Adventure Activities in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai was our beautiful home base for a year and there are always plenty of things to see and do in this amazing city. Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand and the most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand. There are hundreds of temples and cultural sites to visit within the city limits. Chiang Mai also offers plenty of adventure activities which we were excited to explore. We found some great tour companies and locations to explore and highly recommend braving the heat and going on...

Six Scenic Flight Tours Around the World

One of the best ways to see a new city (or an old one) is from above. And I don’t mean staring through your tiny circular window as the wheels drop over a new destination. I mean preferably with the wind in your face soaring over the best natural and manmade wonders your location has to offer. After trying a few flying adventures, we can definitively say this one of our favorite types of exploration. You can gain a new perspective from the air: an improved sense of scale and...

Surviving Songkran: Tips for Thailand’s Largest Water Fight

If you’re enjoying Songkran this week, first of all, have fun! You’re going to have an exhausting, amazing experience fighting and laughing with thousands of strangers in celebration of the Thai new year. Several Southeast Asian countries celebrate Songkran by pouring water on each other as a blessing. Temples will be packed with patrons and streets filled with water fights.   Chiang Mai is home to one of the most rambunctious and largest celebrations, but you can participate all over the country. We ended our time living in Chiang Mai with the...

Journey To Alcatraz

Sometimes tourist attractions are listed as the number one activity in their city for a reason. Even if you tend to shy away from crowded spots, when tours are well done, the journey includes incredible views, and you’re visiting the most infamous island in the world, it can be completely worth it. Alcatraz is not a tourist attraction to be skipped. We had a great time, learned a lot about the history of the creepy rock and it turned out to be a great rainy day activity.   “The Rock” as it...

Countryside Motorbike Tour In Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia is a country rich with culture and historic terrain begging for explorers to leave the tourist centers and venture out into the countryside. Aside from visiting the famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, we knew we wanted to go off the beaten path to see what life is like for most Cambodians in the countryside. With Tinggly, a company that facilitates giving the gift of travel, we took a motorbike tour through remote neighborhoods down dirt roads and got to meet the locals. If you’ve ever been stuck with a...

Grasshopper Adventures Bangkok: Canal Boat and Bike Trip Review

Riding a bicycle through the insanity that runs the streets of Bangkok might not sound like such a great idea, but if you’re in search of an urban adventure with a cultural twist, it might be just what you’re looking for. Grasshopper Adventures Bangkok offers bike tours and many excursions in different styles. We experienced the half day Canal Boat and Bike trip through Bangkok that brings riders through the old city via a scenic boat ride, past temples, homes and markets. There was a good mix of stopping to...

Driving A Lamborghini On The F1 Track With Ultimate Drive Singapore

Our schedule in Singapore was packed every day so we tried to maintain a balance of culturally educational activities and some activities that were just plain fun. Ultimate Drive fits in the latter category: Pure. Unadulterated. Fun. Several weeks ago, when we were first planning our visit to Singapore, I was having the adrenaline itch again. It had been too long since my last spine tingling adventure and I was feeling the need to attach myself to something with a greater velocity than our scooter. I searched for a sky diving...

Diving In Krabi With Aqua Vision Dive Center

When we were first planning our trip to Krabi we realized that it would be the perfect opportunity for my first dive trip and it didn’t take long for us to realize that there are well over a dozen different dive centers around Krabi Town and Ao Nang. It seemed that they all offered similar diving classes and prices and traveled to similar diving sites. Then we happened across Aqua Vision Dive Center in Ao Nang. Their clean-cut website described how they feature small group diving using speedboats to arrive at...

Rock Climbing In Chiang Mai With CMRCA

Our Introduction to Rock Climbing Class with Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventures (CMRCA) was just as amazing as our caving experience with them. I have taken rock climbing classes many times before in Colorado and the quality of CMRCA’s class and instructors was up to par. All their instructors are certified under American climbing standards and pay close attention to safety. We arrived at the office of CMRCA about half an hour before we were supposed to meet them so we could grab a quick breakfast and coffee at a nearby cafe....

Intro to Caving Course: Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventure

Our Introduction to Caving class with Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventure (CMRCA) ended up being a lot more rappelling and scaling up ropes and a lot less crawling through holes than we expected. It was an unforgettable experience and the cave was an amazing natural phenomenon to behold. We met the team at CMRCA's office in the southeast corner of Old City where they fitted our gear and we filled out some short paperwork. The drive from the office out to Crazy Horse Buttress was about an hour filled with lovely...

Flight of the Gibbon: Zipline Through the Jungle in Thailand

If you have ever visited Chiang Mai, you've probably seen the brochures and banners promoting the zipline company Flight of the Gibbon around Old City, on tuk-tuks and in Cafes. We knew we needed to give this popular tourist activity a try, and we were not disappointed. We were pretty excited to fly through the jungle and spend a day eye-to-eye with the treetops of Thailand. Flight of the Gibbon picked us up from our apartment and drove us in a van with other adventurers about 45 minutes to the zipline...

Chiang Mai Sky Adventure: Taking Sightseeing To The Next Level

There are many fun activities to do and beautiful places to see in the city of Chiang Mai. I could easily sit down and write a lengthy list of the most interesting and breathtaking things to do on a visit.  I believe that my latest adventure could easily sit in the top of that list. I was not familiar with microlights nor had I even seen one in person before we drove up to Chiang Mai Sky Adventure airstrip a few Kilometers outside of Chiang Mai’s Old City. I have flown...

Hiking an Active Volcano: New Zealand

I gazed into the massive crater of the White Island volcano, holding my camera in one hand, trying to capture the wisps of steam and smoke creeping up the cliff side. In the other hand I held my gas mask tight against my face as a cloud of fumes engulfed me. When the cloud had passed, the chaotic beauty of white island's moonscape was fully exposed. In my recent travels to the North Island of New Zealand, my sister and I were looking to have an unique and exciting trip. With...

Palomar Observatory Trail

During our stay in San Diego we realized that it was time for us to start eating healthier and exercising more often. After many years of living and working in the city, our trips out to the mountains and forests for hiking have grown few and far between. We decided to change this so we headed out to Palomar Mountain to hike the famous Palomar Observatory Trail. The Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail is a great easily accessible hiking trail that leads up to the Hale Telescope and the world-class Palomar Observatory....

New Zealand: Craters of the Moon

As I walked down the path into the craters of the moon I watched in awe as the wind threw wisps of steam from the billowing thermal vents into spirals. I could hear boiling mud in the distance as I ventured further into nature’s sulfurous spa. The Craters of the Moon is a must-see geothermal field close to Taupo, New Zealand on the North Island. Wooden walkways have been constructed over the hot soil and vents so that visitors may safely pass through the field and view the various craters and...

First Skydive in Taupo New Zealand

"Keep your legs bent and whatever you do, do not throw up on me!" he yelled. These were the parting words of my tandem master as we jumped out of the tiny yellow plane and began our 15,000 foot plunge toward the earth. This was the literal high point of my skydiving adventure in Taupo New Zealand. Before I had even purchased my ticket to New Zealand to visit my sister, I knew for sure that I wanted to go skydiving. It had been sitting on my bucket list for far...

New Zealand: Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula

During my travels to the North Island of New Zealand this year I made my first ever trip to Hot Water Beach on the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula. This beach is truly unique due to two volcanic mineral springs beneath the beach that push heated water up through the sand. Near the rocks at the southern end of the beach you can dig a hole in the spring area to create your own personal hot tub in the beach sand!
