Thavorn Beach Village and Spa

As you wander the grounds of Thavorn Beach Village and Spa in Phuket the resort’s history and legends about the area unfold. Statues of mythical and earthly creatures alike emerge from the dense tropical plants and fountains that are incorporated around the resort’s focal point, the lagoon pool.

Thavorn2

When Mr. Thavornwongwongse built the resort, the land was given to him by an elderly couple who used to farm the area. This couple told Mr. Thavornwongwongse that this property is the place where Naka the dragon-snake fell in love with a woman name Marisa and asked her to come live with him in the ocean as a mermaid. When she died, her spirit returned to the bay. He was stricken with grief and never left the bay in order to protect her soul. It is said that the surrounding mountains are his heads.

The story of their lost romance is incorporated in the decor which is somehow deeply romantic and fun at the same time. The property is directly on the beach so you can walk from the ocean into the free form pool in just a few steps.

The Pool

This pool is one of the largest in Southeast Asia and we have never seen anything like it. Pool access rooms have private patios with ladders right into the water which are shielded by the many trees that hang over the pool, some of their branches even swooping downward to touch the water. In the morning, flowers float serenely before they are scooped up along with other debris by employees wading around to clean.

The pool is so windy, you have to be careful not to miss parts of it. There are statues of elephants with children on their backs in one area, a “secret” portion with a waterfall that can’t be seen from the outside, and a swim up bar on the deeper area. Bridges cross over parts of the pool to connect rooms to the rest of the resort.

In one corner of the property, behind the small gym with a view of the ocean, is a deeper, more traditional style pool.

The Grounds

We could say so much about the grounds at Thavorn Beach, but the truth is you need to see it for yourself. A main objective of the resort is to incorporate nature into your experience and they certainly succeed. Resident bunnies appear in a petting pen during the day as well as beautiful parrots and mini Thai chickens. At night, we happened on several roosters up in a tree crowing loudly over the sounds of frogs.

In order to preserve the natural habitat, animals are left largely undisturbed and you will see skinks and birds cross your path regulaly. During excavation, prehistoric clam shells were discovered and you can see a couple in glass cases in the lobby.

The beach is beautiful. It ends in a cliff on both sides leaving only the Thavorn with access. At low tide, the reef was poking up above the waves, but high tide made it a fine place to swim or snorkel. Even then, there was plenty of room to enjoy the sand. Take a walk at night to see huge hermit crabs emerge.

The Food

The resort has a couple different dining options. The swim-up bar and coffee shop offer casual outdoor poolside dining. The Marisa Cafe located under the lobby is where breakfast is served and is open for lunch and dinner as well. We had a decent burger at the pool bar and tried a couple cocktails which were a bit too sweet for our taste, as is typical in Thailand.

The star of the food in the resort is the Old Siam restaurant. It sits on the beach and offers outdoor seating in the sand. Our stay at Thavorn coincided with Eric’s birthday, so we enjoyed a private candlelit dinner on the beach and were even serenaded by the acoustic trio providing live entertainment for guests.

We had a prix fixe meal which allowed us to try a few of the amazing Thai dishes. Definitely try the penang curry!

Breakfast in the Marisa Cafe was busy and had the typical western and Asian options. Seating by the pool is available as well as under the covered restaurant.

The Room

Thavorn has beach view villas, hillside villas and pool access villas. Beach view and hillside villas are the more private options. We stayed on the Hillside and had amazing views of the resort below and the bay from our balcony. To get to our room, we took the charming cable car up a few stories. During the day, when you don’t want to wait for the car, there is also a road that curves down to the ground level.

We had a king size bed, separate tub and shower inside and a jacuzzi on our balcony. The room was spacious and had a seating area and desk as well. The furniture was a bit dated, but the best feature was the incredible view anyway.

The staff in the resort were great, especially the wait staff in the restaurant and pool bar. They were engaging and happy to make menu recommendations and they all seemed to be having a great time.
