A-Star Phulare Valley: Chiang Rai Countryside Resort

A-Star Phulare Valley Resort in the hills of Chiang Rai, Thailand, is a unique resort with a variety of Chalets and spacious Pool Villas. The expansive grounds spread over the top of a large hill, and the resort is laid out so that all the rooms and villas have beautiful views of the trees and countryside. The paths within the resort are well manicured and the large infinity pool in the center adds a breathtaking viewpoint to the relaxing scene.

We enjoyed our time away from the busy streets of Chiang Mai and this chance to explore some different terrain. If you have the opportunity to explore Chiang Rai, A-Star is a wonderful place to do so in peace and comfort.

The Grounds

A-Star sits on an organic farm where many of the restaurant’s ingredients are grown. A flock of fluffy sheep roams near the entrance to the hotel. We fed them bundles of grass provided by a caretaker and they eagerly ran over to meet us when he bleated at them. After a few days in the area, we felt like these grounds were a great representation of the agricultural Chiang Rai. It was such a beautiful place to wake up. Don’t miss the pretty gardens on the way in to the resort.

It is a bit cooler in Chiang Rai than Chiang Mai, especially at night, but the sun was still intense. We were thankful for the pool and shaded areas throughout the property. The car park is a short walk down the hot driveway, but golf carts and their cheerful drivers are always ready to give you a lift.

The Room

We stayed in a 203 sqm. (2,185sqft) Pool Villa with king size bed and private infinity pool. The villa was perched on the hillside with a great view of the surrounding area. We watched the sun set over the mountains from our patio.

The pool, sun deck and room were surrounded on three sides by a high privacy wall and the fourth side had an open railing facing down the hill for the wonderful view. The living area and bedroom were modern, but cozy. The bed was comfortable, and in the mornings we awoke to the sun shining through the glass wall of the bedroom.

The bathroom was very spacious with vanity areas more than large enough for two people. There was a separate bathtub and huge shower in addition to the outdoor shower by the pool.

The Food

The restaurant is located next to the infinity pool and shares the same amazing views.  “Farm-to-table” menu items change depending on the season. Tables inside and out have a view of the surrounding foothills and we enjoyed the scenery during the daily breakfast buffet as well. On certain nights of the week a BBQ with live music is set up on the grassy knoll down the hill from the resort. We were treated to folk music by a local band and a variety of kabobs grilled to order while enjoying the bonfire.

We tested out the room service a couple times and it arrived quickly and was extremely tasty. If you like burgers, this is a perfect place to get one. The Australian beef patty is juicy and extremely delicious. It’s not every day you get beef that great in Thailand!

The Location

A-Star Resort is located about 20 minutes away from the center of Chiang Rai and the airport. The resort is set back over a kilometer from any main road and is the area is completely silent at night, with very little light pollution.

During our visit, we stumbled on Doi Ob Park. The entrance is just past the sign for A-Star and if you are there for a couple days, it is definitely worth a visit. Perfect for picnics or a morning stroll, this park has tons of picnic spots and even some fun swings.

We had a wonderful trip into Chiang Rai and enjoyed our time relaxing and swimming at A-Star. We hope we have another chance to relax and more time to explore the farm and play with the sheep!
