Kiyora Spa: Chiang Mai’s Urban Oasis

Kiyora Spa is located a few blocks away from the old city of Chiang Mai on a quiet neighborhood street. The Spa is small, but offers an extensive treatment menu with everything from the traditional thai massage to 4.5 hour “spa-cation” packages. We got to try the 2.5 hour “scrub, rub and compress” package which includes a body scrub, an oil massage and a hot herbal compress massage.

We were warmly greeted upon arrival and offered a tea welcome drink. The staff was quick to help us with our bags and make sure we were as comfortable as possible. We were then given a sample selection of body scrubs and scented oils to choose for our treatment. The benefits of the different ingredients and scents were explained and we were told which skin types each scrub complimented best. Eric chose a deep cleansing ginger body scrub and Evanne chose the coconut vanilla scrub.

The private treatment rooms are separate little bungalows with a pretty wooden walkway running between them. We could just hear the fountains over the soothing music that played during our massages, which added a soothing touch.

The body scrub was gently exfoliating and smelled wonderful. After we rinsed off, we got the hot oil massages and finally the herbal compress. The heat of both treatments was incredibly soothing. Even the room was warmed a bit after the scrub, which was especially nice since spa rooms are often a little too cold. The scrub and oils left our skin incredibly smooth and moisturized. It was easy to feel the immediate benefits of the treatment.

If two and half hours at a massage sounds like a long time to you, you should definitely try this package. The time melted away and by the end we had lost track of it completely. The atmosphere in the room was on point from the music and the running water to the lighting and bowls of flowers under the table.

After the session we floated back into the lobby area and enjoyed hot tea and mango with sticky rice. We let the relaxation settle in and then reluctantly left to carry on with the rest of our day.

Kiyora spa doesn’t have massive curb appeal, but it is definitely a quality option if you are looking for a spa in Chiang Mai. You could drive right past it in this busy setting, but once inside the walls, this serene plot immediately inspires relaxation. We were also inspired by their many repeat customers (some come in five days in a row!) to take a spa-cation of our own. How have we not thought to do that yet! The staff here was wonderful and we were really impressed with the treatments, the scrubs and oils and the overall atmosphere.

Evanne and Eric left jobs in Washington, D.C., headed for Chiang Mai, and look forward to exploring everywhere in between.
